Module III: Intervention of Sensory and Motor Issues in Individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome

The Five Senses Plus The Two Hidden Senses

Sense Receptor Perception
Tactile Skin Touch
Auditory Ear Sound
Visual Eyes Sight
Olfactory Nose Smell
Gustatory Mouth, tongue Taste
Vestibular Semicircular canals and gravity receptors, located in the inner ear Movement, head position, change and position in space
Proprioception Muscles and Joints Body Awareness, Body position

Now that we are aware of these seven senses, we can explore how they take in sensory input, respond to it, and use it for skill development. Although most people consider the process of sensory integration a circular one, for the purposes of this course, we will explain the process and terminology using a more linear approach. It will be important however, to remember this circular model of sensory integration throughout this next section.
