Sensory and Motor Problems in Individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome

The purpose of this course is to introduce the learner to the sensory and motor problems that are often a part of Asperger’s Syndrome. These difficulties can have a significant impact on a person’s life and compound the identifying feature of this syndrome, difficulty with social engagement. The course is divided into three modules: The first module reviews the literature describing sensory and motor problems in Asperger’s Syndrome. The second module discusses the assessment of these problems, and the third discusses intervention including environmental modification and the use of sensory integration techniques. The course is meant for parents, teachers and others who wish to increase their understanding of this disability. Links to other sites on the web will also be included

Course Objectives:

    The learner will:
  1. Be able to identify ways that sensory and motor problems can interfere with the activities of everyday life in Asperger’s Syndrome.
  2. Be able to identify both formal and informal ways sensory and motor problems can be assessed in Asperger’s Syndrome.
  3. Be able to describe environmental changes and intervention approaches that may be helpful when a person with Asperger’s Syndrome demonstrates sensory and/or motor difficulties.

Module I: Description of Sensory and Motor Problems in Asperger’s Syndrome and Impact on Function

Topic Description:

This module will review the literature on sensory and motor problems in Aspergers Syndrome. Research studies will be reviewed as well as written accounts of persons with Asperger’s Syndrome or parents of children with Asperger’s. The module has been divided into two major sections. The first section will discuss motor problems, including a discussion of fine motor problems or skills involving use of the hands and gross motor problems or skills such as walking, running, playing sports etc. The second section will discuss sensory issues. Short exercises have been included to help the learner understand the nature of these problems and how they interfere with function.

Objectives:

    The learner will:
  1. Be able to describe functional problems related to fine motor and gross motor deficits seen in Asperger’s Syndrome.
  2. Be able to describe sensory problems that can be related to Asperger’s Syndrome
  3. Have a better understanding of how these problems can influence behavior and function.

Module II: Assessment of Sensory Motor Problems in Asperger’s Syndrome: Issues Pertaining to Assessment, Assessment Process, Test Measures and Accommodations

Topic Description:

This module will discuss assessment of sensory and motor problems in people with Asperger’s. Case studies, exercises and charts will be provided to help the reader better understand the assessment process. This module is divided into three major sections : The first section is about various issues pertaining to assessment of sensory and motor problems, such as identification in a public school setting, early intervention and differences between school and private assessments. The second section is about the specifics of the assessment process, such as identification, referral, assessment procedures and program planning. The third section discusses testing measures and testing methods. Included is a discussion of formal and informal test measures, as well as testing accommodations one might use with a person with Asperger’s Syndrome.

Objectives:

The learner will :

  1. Be better able to understand the importance of a comprehensive assessment of sensory and motor problems.
  2. Have access to methods and tools in order to help with early identification of sensory and motor problems.
  3. Be able to make knowledgeable and up to date decisions before initiating an assessment of sensory and motor problems for an individual with Asperger’s Syndrome.

Module III: Intervention of Sensory and Motor Problems in Asperger’s Syndrome

Topic Description:

In this module, the reader will learn about the history of sensory integration, current definitions of sensory integration, and the components of sensory integration intervention. Charts, exercises, and case studies will be used to help the reader achieve a better understanding of sensory integration theory and intervention.

Objectives:

The learner will:

  1. Be able to feel comfortable with the terminology and definitions commonly used in sensory integration theory.
  2. Have a working knowledge of common sensory issues that may arise with person’s with Asperger’s Syndrome.
  3. Become familiar with sensory integration intervention techniques.
  4. Be able to formulate a “sensory diet” based on behaviors or known sensory processing issues.
