Postcards From My Mind: Perspectives of Asperger's SyndromeAuthor: Alex MichaelsAlex Michaels has extensive experience working with individuals of all ages, from infancy to adulthood, who have disorders of socialization, communication, behavior, cognition, and intellect (both challenged and gifted). For the past eight years, she has worked in private practice, providing individual instruction and educational consultation to families and schools. Alex also previously worked as a Senior Coordinator for the North Shore ARC, where she educated families and professionals, designed and implemented a curriculum to help explain developmental disabilities to peers, and created an expressive media sibling workshop. Prior to her work at the NSARC, Alex was a therapist and teacher at a school for children with severe developmental disorders. Alex lectures across the United States on various aspects of childhood disabilities. Alex also has a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome and has just finished writing a book titled Postcards from My Mind, which provides a first-hand perspective about how people with Asperger's Syndrome think, what it feels like to have a deregulated sensory system, and numerous interventions. Alex was also featured in the National Geographic magazine article (July 1999) about vision and sensory processing, titled "Quest for Color." At Educational Consultants of New England, Inc. Alex is the executive director overseeing all divisions of operations. Alex can be frequently found working on new projects for students and the community. Alex returned to school as an adult after learning the Theory of Mind and majored in Neuroscience and Genetics. From the work she did with herself and her studies, Alex created a therapy call Bateson Therapy which teaching students Executive Functioning and Theory of Mind skills.
